Basketball in the Dominican Republic’s eastern region is lived with a special energy. Within that sporting tradition, the Cañeros del Este represent much more than a team: they symbolize identity, competition and a passion that brings communities together around every game.
With a historic presence in Higüey and La Romana, the franchise has built a close relationship with supporters who follow each season with enthusiasm, making every game an experience where sport and a sense of belonging meet. The team itself recognizes both cities as part of its sporting stages, including the Leo Tavárez Multipurpose Center in Higüey and the Eleoncio Mercedes Sports Center in La Romana.
On the court, every possession reflects intensity. Beyond it, the Cañeros represent a community that finds in basketball a place to gather, celebrate and share the same passion.
An identity built around sport
The Cañeros’ history is closely linked to the growth of professional basketball in the eastern region. Since joining the National Basketball League, the team has developed an identity characterized by competitiveness, perseverance and a lasting connection with its audience.
The 2026 season once again demonstrated that ability to remain among the leading teams. The Cañeros advanced to the elimination stage with eight wins and eight losses, earning their fourth consecutive postseason appearance and their tenth in 16 seasons in the league.
The thrill of competing
Throughout 2026, the Cañeros delivered several of those memorable moments. Yeison Colomé’s performance became one of the season’s standout stories, including a 39-point, nine-three-pointer performance that propelled the side toward the semifinals. It was joined by games decided in the final moments, overtime contests and victories that kept the excitement alive until the final second.
Higüey, a city that lives sport
To speak of the Cañeros is also to speak of their bond with Higüey. The city has a strong sporting tradition and a community that finds in basketball a place of intergenerational connection. Families, young people and supporters come together to cheer, celebrate every basket and share the energy of high-level competition.
